Positions on the EALR

Associate Editors

The real flesh and blood of the journal are the associate editors. Associate journal editors are the ones who actually edit and prepare the articles for publication. Associate editors work in teams on the articles under the executive editors, who review the associate editors' work and help them with any questions they have while editing. This position has a low time commitment and can be held in conjunction with other positions on the journal. No prior experience is necessary.

Executive Editors

Executive editors review and guide the work of the associate editors as they edit and prepare the articles chosen for publication. We have several executive editors so that each executive editor supervises a small group of associate editors. This position can be a bigger time commitment than the associate editor positions. Prior experience with the Bluebook is helpful. This position is generally reserved for 2L and 3L students, but 1L and LLM students have held these positions in the past.

Alumni and Public Relations Editor

We have accumulated alumni members for whom we maintain contact information since they are or they know people who are interested in giving submissions, speaking at association events, etc. This editor is in charge of maintaining that database and for periodically communicating with our alumni. This editor is also responsible for general PR for the journal and the association more generally, and serves as a liaison to other university groups and the general public. As such, this person provides support to the Lectures Coordinator and Symposium Editor.

Research Editor

The Research Editor is responsible for managing our source materials. In particular, the research editor will request interlibrary loans and assist associate editors in locating source materials. This person will work with our librarians at Biddle frequently and will learn excellent research skills in the process.

Articles Editor

Articles Editors are responsible for initial review of submissions and for all contact with authors. The articles editors may also have some first-round editing responsibilities. Articles editors will seek expert feedback before selecting articles, and will continuously monitor other publications to ensure that our journal publishes only significant, original works.

Lectures Coordinator

We typically hold "brown bag lunches" once or twice a month, where we have a professor from the Law School or the broader University speak on a topic of interest to the group (basically, anything relating to East Asia). In the past we've been lucky enough to have some renowned visiting scholars/speakers, as well. Anyone in the university community who's interested can attend and bring their lunch with them, so this serves as a great venue to discuss the topic addressed with a leading scholar in the field in an informal setting. This position basically entails brainstorming topics for the lunches and contacting potential presenters, then organizing the actual talks (scheduling with the presenter, reserving a room, sending out a notice about the event). The time commitment for this position is moderate but is year-long. The lectures coordinator also works with the Symposium Editor and the PR editor. This is a great position for 1Ls looking to get an early leadership role.

IT/Web Editor

The web editor is responsible for our online presence, including maintaining our external website and intranet, and for our communications systems including e-mail lists and databases. The IT editor also produces and publishes the final journal and creates document templates. PHP skills are useful but not absolutely critical.

Symposium Editor

In the past we've done one main symposium in the spring. The symposium editor is responsible for organizing the event, including selecting a topic in conjunction with the Board, seeking out speakers, and arranging for space, food, and accommodations. This position requires little time except for the few weeks leading up to the event. The symposium editor will work closely with the treasurer, alumni/PR editor, and lectures coordinator. Prior experience with EALR is preferred, but not a requisite.

Managing Editors

The managing editors are in charge of gathering submissions and interacting with authors. Unlike most of the other editors, these editors are active year round. Basic duties include responding to authors who submit pieces to be considered for publication, maintaining correspondence with authors whose articles we select for publication, and reviewing and supervising the review of submissions we receive. The managing editors also supervise all of the other editors, maintain our website, send out calls for papers, and review all edited articles before submitting them to the Editor-in-Chief for final review. The managing editors are also responsible for building our subscriber base. This position requires a significant time commitment, and is generally reserved for students with prior EALR experience.

Editor-In-Chief

The Editor-In-Chief is ultimately responsible for everything the EALR does. The EIC does the final review of all edits, and makes all final decisions. The EIC is responsible for negotiating our contracts with LexisNexis and Westlaw, filing/signing all paperwork with the University, and organizing Board meetings. This position requires a significant time commitment, and is generally reserved for 2L or 3L students with prior experience with EALR.
