The East Asia Law Review is now accepting applications for Associate Editors and select board positions. As a University of Pennsylvania Law School affiliated publication, we accept students of all levels - 1Ls, 2Ls, 3Ls, and LLMs.
Recently, EALR has made many significant strides towards becoming a strong presence on Penn Law's campus as well as one of the premiere English-language journals specializing in East Asian law. These strides include: hosting EALR's inaugural symposium; expanding EALR's publication schedule to multiple yearly issues; presenting a plethora of on-campus events relating to East Asian law; and, most importantly, having the opportunity to publish articles of the highest quality and contemporary relevance to East Asia. As a journal still in its formative stage, these achievements are essential to our continuing growth. However, transcending these recent successes over the next year and beyond will be what solidifies our reputation as the gold-standard for world-class East Asian legal scholarship.
Benefits:
- Collaboration between JDs and LLMs holding a variety of interests in Asia;
- Improve your Bluebooking skills while contributing to a publication;
- Get a network of students, academics, and professionals with interests in Asia;
- Academic credit (except 1Ls);
- Boost your resume, especially 1L and LLM students who would not be able to participate in another journal; and
- Keep up to date on news, events, and opportunities related to the practice of law in East Asia.
Requirements:
Every position on the journal has different requirements. However, because we generally only publish two issues per year, the time commitment is low for most positions. We are able to award academic credit to students as an independent research seminar under Prof. Jacques deLisle's supervision based on the expected time required for each position.

Please send completed applications to upennealr@law.upenn.edu.
FAQs About Application Process:
Who is eligible to apply? Are certain classes given preference for certain positions? For board positions, experience and vision are generally more important than an applicant's graduating year. Generally, we hope to have an Executive Board well-mixed with developing 2Ls, seasoned 3Ls, and hopefully some incoming LLMs. Associate Editors are not expected to have any journal experience, so class year is not considered. Can incoming 2Ls join EALR and also join additional journals at Penn Law? Of course! EALR Members are very often concurrent editors for Law Review, JIL, JBL, JCL, or JLASC. Being an EALR member as well as on another journal is a wonderful opportunity to help manage a young a growing journal (something that you don't get with the other journals) and also gain additional editing experience at a more established journal. I did not have a formal editing position with EALR this year. Am I still able to apply for an Executive Board position? Yes. While we will give preference to those who served on EALR in some capacity, non-EALR affiliates may still apply to the Executive Board.
All Penn Law students who will be enrolled in the 2010-2011 are welcome and encouraged to apply. Note that pursuant to Law School policy, however, 1L's will not be able to receive credit for their participation in the journal.
Are there any membership requirements?
Language skills are of course welcome, but by no means necessary. While many members of the journal have some formal academic training or living experience in East Asia, many do not - all that is required is an interest in East Asian legal issues.
How are members chosen?
Associate Editors are chosen on the basis of their completed applications. Some, though not all, editorial board applicants may be requested to interview with the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editors before being selected.
