The East Asia Law Review is now accepting applications for our editorial board. As a University of Pennsylvania Law School affiliated publication, we accept students of all levels - 1Ls, 2Ls, 3Ls, and LLMs.

Recently, EALR has made many significant strides towards becoming a strong presence on Penn Law's campus as well as one of the premiere English-language journals specializing in East Asian law.  These strides include: hosting EALR's inaugural symposium; expanding EALR's publication schedule to multiple yearly issues; presenting a plethora of on-campus events relating to East Asian law; and, most importantly, having the opportunity to publish articles of the highest quality and contemporary relevance to East Asia.  As a journal still in its formative stage, these achievements are essential to our continuing growth.  However, transcending these recent successes over the next year and beyond will be what solidifies our reputation as the gold-standard for world-class East Asian legal scholarship.

Benefits:

  • Collaboration between JDs and LLMs holding a variety of interests in Asia;
  • Improve your Bluebooking skills while contributing to a publication;
  • Get a network of students, academics, and professionals with interests in Asia;
  • Academic credit (except 1Ls);
  • Boost your resume, especially 1L and LLM students who would not be able to participate in another journal; and
  • Keep up to date on news, events, and opportunities related to the practice of law in East Asia.

Requirements:

Every position on the journal has different requirements. However, because we generally only publish two issues per year, the time commitment is low for most positions. We are able to award academic credit to students as an independent research seminar under Prof. Jacques deLisle's supervision based on the expected time required for each position.

The available positions are as follows
Editor-in-Chief
Managing Editor (2)
Executive Editor (4+)
Research Editor (2)
Articles Editor
Symposium Editor
Lectures Editor
Public Relations & Alumni Relations Editor
Information Technology Editor
Treasury & Fundraising Editor

(Note: Associate Editor applications will be accepted later in the semester.)

Applying:

Please send completed applications to upennealr@law.upenn.edu (or just respond to this email) at any time before 3:00pm on Sunday, February 28th.  Interviews will take place the week of March 1st.  We will announce the Volume VI Board the week of March 15th.

FAQs About Application Process:

How is the Executive Board chosen?

First, we will review the applicant's application, paying close attention to the applicant's relevant experience as well as their level of interest, and decide whom we would like to interview.  Second, we will interview those applicants the week of March 1st.  Third, members of the Executive Board will determine which applicant is the best fit for the position and notify them no later than the week of March 15th.

When does the new Board assume their duties?

This depends on the position:  The incoming Executive Board will immediately begin to shadow the current Executive Board and will assume all formal duties at the end of the semester.  However, some incoming editors, such as the Symposium Editor and Articles Editor, will immediately begin some aspects of their positions.  The incoming Editor-in-Chief will work closely with the current Editor-in-Chief on all matters from day one.  Depending on their level of experience, some incoming editors will be asked to work on a fourth article for Issue 2 so that they can get a sense of what their positions require. (Everyone, especially 1Ls: we understand that your priority is to prepare for finals and we will do our best to accommodate your schedules.  Don't worry!)

Are certain classes given preference for certain positions?

Experience and vision are generally more important than an applicant's graduating year.  Generally, we hope to have an Executive Board well-mixed with developing 2Ls, seasoned 3Ls, and hopefully some incoming LLMs.  However, the Editor in Chief and at least one Managing Editor must be an incoming 3L.  Besides those, we encourage everyone to apply for any position for which they feel prepared and, most importantly, enthusiastic!

Can incoming 2Ls sit on the EALR Executive Board and also join additional journals at Penn Law?

Of course!  EALR Executive Board Members are very often concurrent editors for Law Review, JIL, JBL, JCL, or JLASC.  Being an EALR Executive Board Member as well as on another journal is a wonderful opportunity to help manage a young a growing journal (something that you don't get with the other journals) and also gain additional editing experience at a more established journal.

I did not have a formal editing position with EALR this year.  Am I still able to apply for an Executive Board position?

Yes.  While we will give preference to those who served on EALR in some capacity,  non-EALR affiliates may still apply to the Executive Board.  Please keep in mind, though, that if you are applying for a position where you will oversee others' editing duties, such as Executive Editor or Managing Editor, you will be expected to have had previous editing experience at a law journal.

What if I want to remain in my current position?

Please reapply for the position, but know that if you have done well in your current capacity we will take that heavily into consideration.

What if I have more questions about specific positions?

Please feel free to see the position descriptions at http://www.pennealr.com/pages/about_us/membership/positions.php or speak with a member of the Volume V Executive Board at your convenience.  (Names of the current Board can be found at http://www.pennealr.com/pages/issues/volume_5.php.)  Naturally, you can speak with current members of the Executive Board at the EALR Lunchtime Event on Tuesday, Feb. 16th or at the EALR Lunar New Year Party on Friday, February 19th.  (Hint: If you speak with us at one or both of these events, you might get some unofficial brownie points when we consider your application.)  If all else fails, feel free to email us at upennealr@law.upenn.edu with any questions.
