Our History
The East Asia Law Review was first published in 2004-2005 as the Chinese Law and Policy Review. Beginning with its 2007-2008 cycle, CLPR changed its name to the East Asia Law Review with the publication of Volume 3. Recognizing that China does not stand alone in the region, we felt that the new name would reflect our interest in a broader view of East Asia. Although the CLPR was a bilingual publication, in English and Mandarin, the EALR is an English language only publication.
Today, EALR is published electronically in PDF format on our website, and is distributed via Westlaw and HeinOnline. Additionally, we are currently pursuing options for broader distribution, including via LexisNexis and other major distributors of legal scholarship.
Our Mission
The East Asia Law Review is committed to addressing current cutting-edge legal developments in Asia. Recognizing an existing gap in the literature exclusively dedicated to the region, we seek to provide a forum where scholars and students may contribute to the development of legal affairs within the region. To this end we seek to publish a journal and to host a variety of events within the Penn legal community in an effort to inform our peers and colleagues about recent developments in the regional jurisprudence.
Our Action Plan:
- Host an annual symposium or lecture series which brings scholars to campus to discuss current research in East Asian law;
- Publish an online journal available through this site or Westlaw;
- Organize regular events focused on current East Asian legal issues in order to build networks among students, alumni, and faculty;
- Manage a website, a mailing list and other electronic resources to detail news, events, and opportunities related to the practice of law in East Asia;
- Compile a comprehensive alumni database that connects students currently attending Penn Law with alumni working in East Asian law-related fields in the U.S. or abroad.
